Put Your Best Face Forward

I had a shoot with a model named Raven on Thursday. It was a black and white series and a little more artsy in nature. I still have much to edit, but here is a nice diptych to get you started. This wasn't my best shoot - I have used the location several times but hadn't checked it out recently, so I was pretty shocked to see how it had changed - I made a mistake and should have went and checked it out again. The light was also super soft and I didn't expect to need a tripod, so we did lose some to the camera shaking.

Lastly, here are a few more photos I find inspiring. You guys know how I feel about bright colors in my photos. These are from Seventeen magazine from back in March, I believe.

Big Things Ahead

Shoot today! And tomorrow! Wish me luck!

Today I am doing a three change test with a beautiful model named Raven. No MUA this time - just me and her. I'm going to get off work and meet up with her slightly after - it'll be my first time doing such a thing, and it's only possible because it is a very simple shoot.

Tomorrow I am going to the city to get together with my wonderful make up artist Jonathan and a model named Kelsey, who is sign with Look in San Francisco. She's a lovely girl and also seems very nice! We're going to do two looks for this one. This one is very important to me - I'd like to impress the agency.

I was happy see some of my photos of Georgia on the websites for both of her agencies (Look in SF and Cast in Sacramento). I'd really like to start testing with Look models and get on the approved list so this is a step in the right direction!

I have less than a month left before my trip to Egypt. I'll be there for a month. I want to do as much as I can beforehand, but at the same time I know I have to be practical and leave some time for the rest of my life plus packing. I also am trying to start booking shoots for when I come back from now. I know myself well enough to know that I will come back and just be dying to shoot. I have a lot of good ideas and I would like to execute all of them before the end of the year. I hope I can gather a good enough team to do it. I have the MUAs and to an extent the models, but I am seriously lacking stylists. They're all four plus change editorial shoots so I need a good team - and I don't think I can do the styling on my own. We'll just have to see.

In the meantime, here are a few images that have been really inspiring me lately. You may be able to see how I translated this inspiration in my upcoming shoots. Click on the images to see more information and to view the artist's other works - they're all amazing people.

The Last Stretch

I've been a been a bit too busy to post lately but I did finish editing the photos from the other two changes of my denimology shoot. Check out the rest on my flickr.

Last weekend I was hanging out with a friend and randomly decided to Alviso, which once had a real marina but now there are just a bunch of abandoned buildings. Quite a bit of water dried up around there, so these docks are just in the middle of some soggy, marsh-like grass. I can't wait to do a shoot here! And yeah I know everyone does a shoot in Alviso if you're from this area but I don't care.

explore the beyond

go where it leads you

I'm leaving to Egypt in about a month! I am super stoked but I want to get some more photoshoots in before I go because I won't be able to do any there and then I'm just going to come home ACHING. I have a confirmed shoot this coming Thursday and an unconfirmed one the day after that. I would like to get one more 4/5 change editorial styled shoot in before I go as well but I still trying to see if that is feasible. Ramadan is approaching and I'll be fasting, which will make it difficult to shoot.

I also am in the pre-planning stages for a high fashion shoot (in alviso) when I come back. It'll be my second time working with a stylist (the very talented Leanne) and my first working with both a make up artist and hair stylist - they're both new talent I found recently. Well, Sarah, the make up artist, found me, and I found Amburlee. Things are still very tentative. It just depends on when Leanne comes from Vancouver. As I keep shooting more changes with more and more complicated looks, I am starting to feel like the stylist is even more important than the model! I seriously have more difficulty finding a good, reliable stylist then I do finding models.

I'm also super excited to be doing some shoot with interesting make-up again. It feels like I have been shooting make up that is actually wearable since my Queen's Daughter shoot with Hannah. But this is FASHION! Make up should be ridiculous! So with that, here are a few make up looks I have stumbled across recently that I am just dying to try out with my own models. Aren't they all so fabulous?

Denimology, Change #2

I've just about wrapped up editing change two for my last shoot. There are a lot more pictures than the ones I edited, obviously, but I just can't see the use of editing any more - unless the make up artist or model want them. We'll see. I'm hoping to finish change three today - the light was terrible for change three, so this will be a salvage kind of job. Hence, I don't expect to post a lot of photos from it, which is unfortunate. This was Georgia's favorite change and I really wanted a complete four change editorial shoot.

It's funny, a lot of people really like this shoot. I am not blown away - it wasn't my best. But then again, I'm not really sure I have a "best." And I guess that is just the way the cookie crumbles. Even Richard Avedon - greatest fashion photographer of all time - was somewhat displeased with the famous photo "Dovima with Elephants." I wish I could find the article to post it here, but he said he didn't like the way the sach fell. I suppose we're all doomed for imperfection by the laws of nature.

And speaking of Avedon, I found this page that shows you his home. This man was a genius.

I had a pretty successful shoot with Georgia from Look and make up artist Hanh on Saturday. We met up at 12:00 and when I got there Hanh was already putting the make up on Georgia. Georgia is beautiful and Hanh is very good at what she does. The make up, which was supposed to be cat eye, looked amazing, and Hanh also did a good job volumizing and teasing Georgia's hair. It was simply perfect.

One of Hanh's relatives acted as her assistant while she did Georgia's hair. Isn't thins simply adorable?

This was the end result before we got to the location and Georgia's hair got all messed up haha. Doesn't she look lovely?

Unfortunately, by the time we got to the location, Georgia's hair had gone limp, and the wind removed all that was left of her lovely polished hair. It didn't bother me much though, I like the messy look.

We did four changes inspired by the Citizens of Humanity Lookbook and the Kate Moss editorial for Paris Vogue. I called it "Denimology." I've only edited looks from the first change plus one from the last change. Here's a peak!

First change:

And the only one from the last change edited so far:

We wrapped up a little before 5:00 p.m., which was an hour earlier than I expected. Including make up, the whole thing took 5 hours, which is pretty good!

I have my first shoot in 2.5 months in about an hour and a half. Wish me luck! With four changes, this shall also be my shoot with the most changes (I would say longest shoot ever, but I have had some shoots that were two changes that lasted like six hours). I anticipate that with make up, travel time, and shooting, we will probably be working for about 7 hours. Yikes. Better take some granola bars. What's worse is that I woke up this morning with some serious chest pain - but I'm a trooper and that won't stop me.

I'm probably not going to be able to edit any today because I am going to a friend's going away BBQ - but then again I'll probably get home and edit regardless of what time it is haha. I know myself fairly well. Hopefully I'll get something to show for all this planning and hoping...

Lastly, I am in love with this video. I can't stop watching it. And I know it starts out a little slow, but keep watching - the end is amazingness.
